This is a question i have been meaning to ask for a while. i was reminded as i was watching the modern drummer dvd and antonio sanchez....
how does one get the left foot clave pedal to not swing back after each hit. You can see that after he strikes and takes his foot off the pedal, the pedal doesnt swing back.....which is great because when you are doing paterns between the hats and clave, thats what you need......does anybody know how you do this?
Thanks

He's sick isn't he, no offense but I think you're paying way to much attention to technique instead of worrying about the music itself. Antonio is a great "musician" not just a drummer, he was actually supposed to play sum tracks from the Matheny record but his PC broke down and he had to improvise a solo on the spot.
Check out his playing on Avishai Cohen's and The International Vamp Band's "Unity", track 3("Etude") was inquired in MD recently, a clave pattern over the vamps/solos if I remember correctly.
About the technique, it's kinda a slide/bouncing technique, I wouldn't call it heel up, but something along those lines, Horacio Hernandez uses that technique alot and so does Akira Jimbo, on his Evolution video, the camera zooms in alot so you get a better "idea" of what he's doing, and the "Wasabi" DVD has a section on Left Foot Clave Action AW

thanks for your concern....i know the difference between technique and music.....its not a technique thing.....its to do with the pedal.....they must do something with the spring?? but i have tried that.....horacio's pedal has the same action....there is NO swing on the pedal whatsoever!??
